German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann David Wadephul arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday after completing engagements in Bengaluru, as part of his two-day official visit to India.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Wadephul is scheduled to meet Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, followed by talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He will depart from India later in the day.

The MEA welcomed him in a post on X, highlighting that his visit comes as India and Germany celebrate 25 years of their Strategic Partnership. “Herzlich Willkommen to India! FM Johann Wadephul of Germany has arrived in New Delhi. His engagements in Bengaluru and Delhi will further strengthen the multifaceted India-Germany Strategic Partnership as we mark 25 years of its completion,” the post read.

Earlier in the day, Wadephul visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru before flying to Delhi. Ahead of his visit, he described India as a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific and a key global player.

Emphasising the strong political, economic, and cultural links between the two nations, Wadephul identified security cooperation, innovation, technology, and skilled workforce recruitment as priority areas for collaboration. “India is a key partner in the Indo-Pacific. Our relations are close—politically, economically, culturally. The expansion of our strategic partnership has much potential: from security cooperation to innovation & technology to recruiting skilled workers,” he noted.

He further stressed that India’s role as the world’s largest democracy gives it an influential voice beyond the Indo-Pacific. “India plays a decisive role in shaping the international order of our century. We as democracies are natural partners in this. In view of massive geopolitical challenges, we want & must preserve the rules-based international order together,” Wadephul stated.

The visit follows recent interactions between Indian and German leaders, including Jaishankar’s meeting with German MP Jurgen Hardt in New Delhi last month.

Germany remains one of India’s closest partners in Europe. The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1951, celebrated 70 years of relations in 2021, and continue to deepen cooperation under their long-standing strategic partnership.
